History: McVay Hospital to Jefferson Place Condominiums
McVay Hospital Gets a New Look
- Article by Lake City Graphic
For the 3rd time since 1916 when the McVay Hospital was built it is getting a new look. Dr. M.J. McVay arrived in Lake City in 1912. There were seven doctors in Lake City at this time. His uncle, J.D. McVay, no doubt drew him here as he had been practicing since 1873.
In 1916 Dr. M.J. McVay built and opened new offices in this building. Then in 1927 he enlarged the building into a 15 bed hospital. The building was beautiful with cloth awnings over each window and an arched door on the west. The hospital operated until 1968.
M.J. McVay died in 1969 and Wayne (Short) and LaVonne Johnson purchased the property and remodeled the hospital into six apartments and it has remained as such until the present time.
This is the building that Paul Iverson (Master Craftsman & owner of the Cornerstone Suites) and Dian Richardson are so interested in preserving. They both have pride and a love for the beauty of the historic buildings and want to preserve them. Both of them are transplants to Lake city, but take great pride and a big interest in the community.
The renovation at the corner of Center & Jefferson is now underway and will be known as Jefferson Place Condominiums, completely remodeled inside and out. There will be four condos, with coverered corridor to your garage. There will be six garages giving the first buyers a choice of 1 or 2 garages.
This is just one block off of the city square and right on ground level - no stops, so where would there be a better place to be?
You may be one of the many Lake City residents that was either born or worked at the McVay Hospital, so to make this your residence would be pretty prestigious!
